With over thirty-five years of experience, Mr. Harrop brings to the practice a depth of experience in both civil trial and appellate practice. Mr. Harrop has had extensive experience in the defense of class action, professional negligence, civil rights, products liability, employment and insurance cases. Throughout his career, Mr. Harrop’s practice has also focused on the defense of physicians, lawyers, hospitals and other professionals. An experienced courtroom litigator, Mr. Harrop has successfully tried and defended many death and catastrophic injury cases. Mr. Harrop’s trial work has also been complemented by a significant practice in Florida’s appellate courts. Mr. Harrop has been appellate counsel in well over 100 Florida appellate decisions, which have helped shape and develop Florida law in a number of important areas.

  • Wilton Dedge v. State of Florida – Successful defense of the State of Florida in groundbreaking litigation filed on behalf of an inmate exonerated by DNA evidence. This case was profiled on CNN’s Larry King Live.
  • Deluke v. Shands – Jury verdict for the defense in wrongful death medical malpractice case involving sudden cardiac death.
  • Lipinski v. Shands – Jury verdict for the defense in a medical malpractice case in which the claimant suffered a partial amputation of the right hand.
  • Carter v. University of Florida, College of Medicine — Jury verdict for the defense in a medical malpractice case in which the claimant suffered partial paralysis following low back surgery.
  • Potter v. University of Florida, College of Medicine – Jury verdict for the defense in a medical malpractice case claiming over $15 Million in economic damages for catastrophic birth-related neurological injuries. .
  • Averett v. University of Florida, College of Medicine — Jury verdict for the defense in malpractice case resulting from inadvertent injury to an artery during a liver biopsy.
  • University Medical Center v. StarMed Staffing — Obtained a $5.9 Million contribution award in favor of a hospital against a temporary nurse staffing agency.
  • Miller v. MidSun Group, Inc. — Jury verdict for the defense in an electrocution injury case in which the claimant suffered a double amputation of his hands and forearms.
  • Maldonado v. Snead, et al. – Summary judgment entered for the defense and affirmed by the Eleventh Circuit in a federal civil rights action against seventeen employees of the Department of Children and Families.
  • Omar v. Lindsey, et. al. – Summary Judgment entered for the defense and affirmed by the Eleventh Circuit in a federal civil rights claim against four employees of the Department of Children and Families.
  • Diaz v. Board of Regents – Defense of the University of South Florida in the large class action lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of bio-medical research. This case was profiled on CBS’s 60 Minutes.
  • Childress v. Hess – Obtained summary judgment for the defense in wrongful death case alleging the sale of alcohol to minors.
  • Dibernardo v. Sloan, et. at. – Summary judgment for the defense in a shareholder’s derivative action alleging breach of fiduciary duty and misappropriation of corporate funds.
  • Wesco v Don Bell Inc, et. al. – Successfully pursued federal declaratory judgment action determining no coverage for catastrophic personal injury claim.
